Imaging Q&A
What is vascular imaging?
When your provider needs to diagnose problems in your arteries and veins, they perform vascular imaging using ultrasound. This noninvasive technique uses safe sound waves to show vascular structures and the flow of blood.
The team at Trident Cardiology Associates, PA, uses vascular imaging to target blood vessels throughout your body, diagnosing conditions such as:
- Peripheral artery disease
- Carotid artery disease
- Renal artery disease
- Peripheral venous disease
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Peripheral aneurysms
- Aortic aneurysms
They also use ultrasound to evaluate your response to vascular treatments.
What type of imaging is an echocardiogram?
What is nuclear imaging?
With this type of diagnostic imaging, your provider sees aspects of tissues and metabolic activity that other imaging types can’t detect. As a result, nuclear imaging reveals problems such as blocked coronary arteries at an earlier stage compared to other imaging techniques.
What happens during a stress test?
They take a baseline ECG and blood pressure reading before you exercise, and then you start to walk on a treadmill. They continuously monitor your heart activity using the ECG, while occasionally checking your blood pressure.
Your exercise starts at a pace that’s easy for you, then gradually increases. You stay on the treadmill until you reach a targeted heart rate or develop symptoms and need to stop. If you can’t exercise, your provider can mimic the effects of exercise on your heart using medications.
The team at Trident Cardiology Associates, PA, may combine a stress test with nuclear imaging or an echocardiogram. Taking these images before and after you exercise and comparing the results provides more information about your heart’s function.
